"Reshaping polyester": how to create new growth drivers in the advanced materials industry
——Zhao Jun, Expert of China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation
Zhao Jun, expert of China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation; Expert Pool Member of Oil & Gas Department, National Energy Administration; Editorial Board Member of "China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Magazine", delivered a report titled "Reshaping polyester": how to create new growth drivers in the advanced materials industry
Mr. Zhao pointed out that based on PTA/DMT as feedstock, high-value specialty materials such as PETG, PCT, and PEN can be developed through copolymer modification. These materials can enter high-growth sectors including automotive electronics, healthcare, and high-barrier films, enabling a transformation from "volume" to "value."
At the same time, high-end materials such as PCT, PEN, and sulfone polymers are currently dominated by foreign companies, with high technological and certification barriers. However, China's strong market demand-especially from automotive electrification and healthcare-offers significant opportunities for domestic companies to substitute imports.
Finally, Mr. Zhao emphasized that under the drivers of policy and ESG, demand for rPET (recycled PET) is growing rapidly. In the future, breakthroughs in food-grade chemical recycling technologies and improvements to recycling systems will be required to promote its expansion from low-end fibers to high value-added packaging applications, thereby creating a "green" growth engine.
