Downstream market applications and development prospects of PET bottle chip
——Chen Canzhong, Deputy General Manager of Wankai New Materials
His presentation was structured into three parts.
In the first part, Mr. Chen highlighted that global and Chinese polyester bottle chip capacity continues to expand, with China emerging as the dominant force, accounting for nearly half of total capacity. The domestic industry has recorded a compound annual growth rate of 10.6% over the past decade, with capacity expected to exceed 21 million tons by 2025. Industry concentration is also high, as the top four producers together control nearly 80% of total capacity.
The second part of the report focused on downstream applications. Soft drinks remain the core demand driver for bottle chips. Global demand has been growing steadily, fueled mainly by emerging economies in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. At the same time, applications are expanding beyond traditional packaging into sheet materials, such as casings for electronic products and trays for fresh produce, creating new growth opportunities for demand.
In the third part, Mr. Chen introduced three innovative materials that are shaping the future of the industry. These include bio-based PEF, a high-barrier material with strong potential as a PET substitute; copolyester PETG, which offers high transparency and easy processing, making it suitable for premium packaging and 3D printing; and rPET, recycled polyester that is central to the industry's sustainability transition.
